Meet the PHES

The 2007-2008 UW Peer Health Educators

Sharon AlizaThe Advisor: Sharon Aliza

Sharon Aliza graduated from Seattle University in 1999 with a Masters degree in Education in Student Development.  As a graduate student, Sharon supervised the Peer Health Educators, a group of student volunteers who educated their peers on the subjects of Sexual Assault Prevention, Alcohol Awareness, Stress Management, and HIV/AIDS Awareness.  Upon graduation, Sharon worked in various colleges as an Academic Advisor and again at Seattle University in the Office of Freshman Success.  In the fall of 2000, Sharon took over as the Director of Health and Wellness at Seattle University.

Sharon came to Hall Health as a temporary employee in Fall 2005 and began work as the permanent manager of the University Health Education Leadership Program (UHELP) in Fall 2006.  She works part-time in Hall Health and spends the rest of her time raising two young sons.

Emily Manahan

Emily Manahan is a junior double majoring in public health and history. This is her first year as a Peer Health Educator and she is so thrilled to be part of this great team. Post graduation, Emily hopes to travel and work in other areas of the world. Sometime after that, she hopes to earn a Masters Degree. In her free time, she likes to cook, watch movies, dance, and create stuff!

Cindy Serrano

When she's not in class or in the WRC, Cindy enjoys strengthing her triceps and abdominals by hanging upside on the poles around campus.

Kelly Ashton

Kelly Ashton is a sophomore majoring in Nursing and planning to attend her first year of nursing school this Autumn. Kelly enjoys being in UHELP because she can work with UW students and especially new freshman who are learning to adapt to the new college environment. She spends most of her time serving in her church, Generation Church. She also works as a nursing assistant at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. One of her favorite things to do is spend time with her nine roomates. Kelly has dreams of marrying an amazing Christian man and having 7 kids.

Katerina Tsybouleva

Katerina is a Junior at the University of Washington, double majoring in Cellular Biology and Public Health.  She is currently a FIG Leader and a member of Delta Zeta.  Katerina works in an undergraduate research lab and also volunteers at Harborview Medical Center.  She loves being involved and the UW campus in general!  Her favorite food is Greek, favorite color is green, and birthday is on June 19th!

Jeff Stallman

Jeff is a Junior at the University of Washington double-majoring in Comparative Religion and Danish.  Jeff has lived in Western Washington his entire life where he developed an interest in health issues, particularly nutrition.  He plans on graduating next year after having the opportunity to study abroad in Denmark.  This is Jeff's first year with UHELP.

Mei Truong

Despite having the unique trait of having only shades of gray as her skin color, Mei has defeated her haters and now lives a happy life as a UW Nursing School student and PHE.

Tiffany Vu

Tiffany is a sophomore planning to major in Biology and minor in Chemistry and Philosophy. This is her first year as a Peer Health Educator. Last November, she attended the Bacchus and Gamma conference in Anaheim with UHELP, where she learned more about promoting health education to college students. Tiffany is also in the Honors program and a Vovinam martial arts instructor. She hopes to travel as much as she can during her remaining years here at the UW.

Lisa Yang

This is Lisa's first year at the University of Washington. She joined UHELP because she hoped to become involved in an organization in college. She writes, "Since this organization is student run, what better way to leave a legacy behind than to be part of this service leadership group! U-Help is the perfect mix of enthusiasm, medical awareness, and student leadership. Service is the key to keeping the university community connected and aware of issues that could be potentially harmful. My hopes are that I can truly bring something to this student organization. In a way, being part of UHELP is a way I can give back to my community. I feel as if I have a responsibility as a University of Washington student to inform others about health issues. I have always loved being someone to give advice and to just listen. I know that I will do a great job as being a Peer Health Educator."

Rommel Fontanilla

Rommel is a senior majoring in Business Marketing and Biology. He is planning on a career as a pharmacist. This is his third year at UW and first year in UHELP. During his spare time he enjoys listening to music, snowboarding, and watching the Office.

Katie Engeln

Biology, Public Health, and Japanese. In the Fall of 2006, she transferred to the University of Washington from the University of Hawaii because "this school is a Mecca for global health studies and outdoors recreation - two of my principle obsessions! (I am now living happily ever after at REI.)"

Katie is a triathlete and a pre-medical student, but during those rare moments when she's not swimming, cycling, running, studying, working in a neurosurgery lab, or fighting for equity in health ("SOCIAL JUSTICE! WOOOO!"), she likes to rock climb, hike, kayak, ski, surf, and go camping. She also LOVES traveling! After graduation, Katie hopes to spend a couple of years vagabonding the planet and working with a humanitarian aid organization before entering medical school. In addition to living a life out in service through Doctors Without Borders, she wants to establish medical relief clinics in war-torn and disaster-stricken regions.

Loida Erhard

Loida Erhard was born and raised in the Seattle area.  She is majoring in Biology, and minoring in Public Health.  At first, she was interested in pursuing biomedical research, but has recently decided to try to go into medicine. Loida has a passion for travel, especially the adventure of going to new places.  She is currently interested in global health issues and plans to work within the global health field when she graduates.  Primarily, Loida is interested in women’s health issues, and would like to work on those topics through UHELP.  She joined UHELP to become more involved in the community, help her fellow students, and gain more experience in health education.

Loida has a wide range of interests outside of school that range from kayaking, tennis, and snowboarding, to Latin dance.  She loves music and considers herself quite the movie buff.

Phyllis Ying

Phyllis is a Junior at UW, and is very bad at science but is still hoping to double major in Biochemistry and Environmental and Conservation Biology. She loves to spend time outdoors, especially running on trails or just wandering around. She also loves to read, but has an unfortunate habit of not finishing books that seem boring after a few chapters. Her current obsession is a children’s TV show called “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” In the future, she would like to be a pediatrician, a geriatrician, or a tree-hugging hippie

Jessica Martin

Jessica is a Pre-Nursing major and is considering pursuing a minor in Math. She hopes to one day graduate from the University of Washington Nursing School and eventually become a nurse practitioner. She loves working with the elderly and young children and hopes to incorporate that with her major. Her hometown is Houston, Texas and she says, "I don't have an accent like most people would think." She loves snowboarding, basketball, lacrosse, hockey, and a variety of sports.

Amanda Young

Amanda is a Freshman at the University of Washington and plans on majoring in Biology and minoring in Spanish. This is her first year as a Peer Health Educator. Her goals in life are to go through medical school, travel, and have a wonderful family. For fun, she plays tennis, plays computer games with Chelsea (her roommate), bakes, listens to Spanish music, does puzzles like sudoko, and watches the Tyra show. She is part of an intramural coed soccer team here at the UW although she has never played soccer before, but wanted to try something new. She likes to work in the kids section at the Arts and Crafts Fair every summer because she loves seeing children smile.

Tony Kim

Penny Li

Jenny Palisoc

Jenny is a Sophomore majoring in psychology and nursing. This is her first year as a peer health educator. She enjoys working with children through the program Jumpstart and with the elderly as a certified nursing assistant. Jenny volunteers at Swedish Medical Center and aspires to someday, become a nurse anesthetist.

Chelsea Phillips

Chelsea is a Freshman majoring in Pre-Nursing. She hopes to further her education here at UW by continuing onto nursing school. Chelsea loves physical activity and enjoys playing ice hockey in the Greater Seattle Hockey League. This summer, she would like to become a certified nursing assistant. She loves traveling, baking pies, hiking, rollerblading, snowboarding, boogie boarding, singing, watching movies and television, dancing, and ice skating. Along with these extracurrcicular activities, she loves to volunteer her time every year at the Seattle Center Winterfest Ice Arena along with other community services.

Brittany Truex

Ashley Vachon

Chandni Virdi

Chandni is currently a Junior majoring in Biology. She is originally from Toronto, Canada but has "adjusted well to the 'always rain' life here in Seattle." She has 2 sisters, one of which she lives with. Chandni loves to dance and sing, and says she is "not very good at either." Her hobbies include: eating, sleeping, and getting her daily dose of exercise walking to her classes.

Elizabeth Mylan Vu

Elizabeth is currently a Junior majoring in Sociology. After graduation, she plans on continuing her education by attending grad school with the intention of becoming a physical therapist. When she's not "studying-away" for tests, she likes to spend her time by volunteering at the Children's Hospital of Seattle, playing the piano and honing her guitar skills (as well as searching for new instruments to play), traveling to widly exotic places so she can eat their wildy exotic food, being outdoors when its sunny, and spending time with her friends and family.

Irene Weber

Irene is an undecided major but is leaning towards Biology. She comes from a large family and has more cousins than she can count. Irene enjoys being outdoors and has had numerous aquatic pets all of whom have been named after literary figures or characters from radio programs and a dog which she had no say in naming. As a barista at Starbucks, she entertains customers with a plethora of bad pirate jokes and uses “what’s your favorite molecule” as a conversation starter in hopes of getting more tips. Irene also knows more about video games, thanks to her brothers, than she would care to (next generation consoles?).

Lisa Phuong Vu

Lisa is a Sophomore and was born and raised in Puyallup, Washington. She is a Psychology major and volunteers at the UW Medical Center's Physical Therapy unit. Lisa loves to run, shop and watch sports!
